AN EXALTATION OF LARKS

My childhood and teenage years were shaped by failures of all kinds. There were
small failures, and then there were bigger failures. And it is that when we are young,
we are told to look up and believe in heaven and to hold on to it. But one day we grow,
and we are taught that up there, there's just the sky, and the sky is just the sky, and
no one might be down here on earth to help us take the fall. I often give in to nostalgia
and go back to those times with this compulsion to revisit a place I once longed to leave
behind. I still close my eyes and look back with wonder, and only in a head-scratching
                      confusion do I go on.

An Exaltation of Larks is an attempt to describe and respond to my own interpersonal
traumas and the quiet, intimate moments that exist within new close relationships.
These photographs are not about grand gestures or visible actions but rather the
unspoken emotions that fill the spaces between people and the solitude that often
lingers even in companionship. Taken with both medium format and field cameras,
with a handheld approach, An Exaltation of Larks is an intimate testimony about panic,
                      joy, solitude and love.
